Conamara Láir Language Plan

This Gaeltacht Language Planning Area (LPT) stretches from Camus, back to Ros Muc, Cill Chiaráin, Carna, Iorras Beag and Inis Ní, and northwards towards Sraith Salach.

The Language Plan Steering Committee of Conamara Láir is operating since the inception of the plan in 2016. As a result of a number of public meetings and public appeals, a voluntary committee was formed with members from all areas of the district and from a range of different social backgrounds. It was the committee’s objective from the outset to identify the community’s needs through the language planning process to ensure that the area thrives as a Gaeltacht and rural region and to present this vision to stakeholders whose investments would have positive impacts on the future of the community. The committee is of the opinion that there is a strong link between the Gaeltacht and Irish speaking community to the area’s high standard of living and successful economy. As the committee feel that they are representing the community, they emphasise the importance of the community’s input and involvement in the language process. A comprehensive plan has been developed that provides information about the status of the Irish language and the strengths and needs of the area as a Gaeltacht region. The plan to promote the Irish language as a vital asset for the region’s economic, educational, cultural and social development is ambitious but realistic for the next seven years and for the next generation.
